The Truth About Leather
Each year one million US workers receive emergency treatment for acute hand injuries ranging from cuts, blisters and abrasions to lacerations, punctures and fractures. According to the US Department of Labor, injures to fingers and hands rank highest in workplace accidents—more than 27 percent.
Hand and finger accidents also rank highest in preventable injuries. Improper hand protection can be a culprit in many accidents, whether it's a comfort problem, improper sizing or the use of outdated products. In regards to the latter issue, the advent of new high-performance synthetic materials makes some safety materials, such as leather, things of the past.
One of the biggest myths about leather gloves is that they offer a significant level of cut protection. This assumption is likely drawn from the thickness of the leather material. Leather, in fact, is a skin and materials can cut through just as easily as human skin, especially when it's we or covered in oil.
Harnessing the technological innovations of the occupational glove industry provides opportunities to increase worker safety and move past the limitations of older, less effective materials such as leather. Studies confirm that most workplace injuries are preventable. The ability to achieve prevention, however, depends on an employers' commitment to safety and employees' involvement in injury prevention.
